What changes do the people in the film experience? What causes those changes? What are the consequences of those changes for the people in the documentary?
Throughout the film, the director shows many changes in how Indians are treated and perceived based on Hollywood films that had been made in those time periods. Everyone had judged Indians based on what the directors at the time had thought would be popular and could take off and be the next big hit. These directors weren’t showing Inidans as they really were but Indians were basing how they act on how these movies portrayed them. Indians were known as hippies, drunks, and cowboys vs indians which as these movies came out people thought of Indians as these things which wasn’t true, there were bad opinions on these Indians just based off the movies everyone was watching. Indians were shown as fighters very often and in the movies accepted that their own death was okay since they had killed many others, this was a bad way of showing Indians since it made them seem bad. There were definitely consequences from these changes such as the Indians being treated differently based on what was being shown in these films. The films were used just to entertain others but most people believe what they see in movies and carry it with them into the real world. Also as Indians went in and out of ‘style’ over the years, lots of Indians that had been actors had lost their jobs and some of the people may have relied on the money they were making from those acting jobs. Some white people also dressed up as Indians to play these characters which wasn’t right at all since they should have gotten real Indians to just do it. Does the filmmakers’ perspective foster respect for diversity and an inclusive society? If so, how? The filmmakers perspective on Indians did show his respect for diversity and inclusion since he showed how the Indians were separate from everyone else and were excluded and treated differently based on these films that were coming out. Indians definitely weren’t treated the same as everyone else, for example, when someone who had won an award had asked an Indian lady to do a speech for him, she had been told she can only have a certain amount of time and isn’t allowed to go over it at all. Also she had definitely been treated ruder than anyone else had been just because she was Indian and had shown up dressed in a traditional Indian dress to show respect to her kind and show that she was proud of who she was. Indians had also went in and out of style which caused different outlooks on Indians since when they were in the films and were being known for things, people actually cared and looked at Indians as the way they were being portrayed. But when they were out of the films, people didn’t look at them as anything other than Indians or whatever their personal thoughts on Indians were.
